Side exhaust: decreases exhaust length, increases awesome.

Does it really? In that fost there is really not that much distance from where the side exhaust is and the rear bumper. Where I think it would make a difference is in a car with a Live Axle rear suspension, as the exhaust has to go over the axle.
Magic formula:

Oh god that formula, stop reminding me I have to continue my engineering degree in a month haha. I think it'll be a little shorter and probably need slightly less bends than the stock exhaust. Also they can make it a larger diameter by using oval section and not needing to avoid any suspension components.

I went to a WTCC race before. Close racing all the way through, with the the lead changing just minutes before the race ended.

Yeah BTCC is much the same. Very entertaining and basically a contact sport, even the support races (clio cup, ginettas, formula ford) are great fun.

The real reason for the side exhaust is that when they switched to turbo engines they were worried about the reduction in noise, so the made the exhaust point towards the crowd.
